Recipe: Aloo Gobi

A traditional street food dish- aloo gobi (potato and cauliflower curry) can be found cooking on all the food stalls in Pakistan, as well as in our good ol' fashioned curry houses back in Blighty. The sweet cauliflower matched with the soft spiced potatoes make this recipe a delicious- and very cheap!- dinner, paired with some steamed basmati rice and peshwari naan bread. A big dollop of mango chutney on the side goes very nicely with it as well!

Aloo Gobi (serves 4)

500g potatoes, peeled and diced
2 tbsp oil
60g butter
1 white onion, diced finely
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
1 green chilli, finely diced
1 tsp cumin seeds
3 tsp ground coriander
½ tsp ground cumin
1 tsp turmeric
½ tsp mild chilli powder
½ a cauliflower, diced
350g passata
400ml water
1 tsp salt
Large handful of fresh coriander, chopped (plus extra for garnish)
Sugar and black pepper to taste

1. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Boil the potatoes for 10 minutes. Drain and set aside. In another large pan, fry the onion, garlic, ginger, chilli and cumin seeds In the oil and butter, for 10 minutes, stirring often.
2. Add the ground coriander, cumin, turmeric and chilli powder, and cook for a couple of minutes. Add the potato and cook for a further 2 minutes. Add all the other ingredients, and cook on a medium heat for 20 minutes, covered, stirring occasionally.
3. Season to taste, and serve with extra fresh coriander!

Recipe: Loaded Jacket Potato Skins

Hey guys, I hope you all had a lovely fun and foodie filled Christmas! Mine was good fun, with lots of yummy things, but a little bit stressful to be honest. I got the 23rd, 24th and 25th off work, but i had to do a big three course dinner for a client on the 23rd, and the other two days felt a bit...i dunno...like i was kept thinking about pressures and how much work annoys me/ Univeristy worries me. And i've had to start work at 9am this morning. Can't switch off- I'm terrible! Anyway, this is a nice recipe I cook fairly often- it's very easy to make, and good as a side dish, starter or main course. Whenever I bake jacket potatoes, I always bake about 6, because I know with any I have leftover the next day I can either stuff them with something nice (like with this recipe) or cut them into wedges and fry them for an easy brunch.

Loaded Jacket Potato Skins (serves 4 as a starter or side dish, serves 2 as a main)

2 baking potatoes
2 thin rashers smoked bacon, diced very finely
6 spring onions
20g butter
75g garlic and herb Boursin
Splash of milk
Salt and pepper
20g parmesan

1. Preheat the oven to 200C. Bake the potatoes for 60-80 minutes or until soft on the inside and the skin is crispy. Remove from the oven, and allow to cool a little.
2. Meanwhile, fry the bacon and spring onions in a non-stick frying pan, for about 5 minutes- or until the spring onions are cooked and the bacon has started going crispy.
3. Whilst still warm, slice the jacket potatoes in half, and scoop out the flesh. Mix the flesh with the butter, boursin, spring onions, bacon and seasoning. Re-stuff into the potato skins, top with parmesan, and put under the grill for 5 minutes- or until golden!

Recipe: Italian Meatballs with Cirio Sauce

Hey guys. So I won a lovely little prize draw, from My favourite recipes (who i still write for) and Cirio- an Italian food company. I got sent a lovely tomato hamper- with these sorts of products in it: tinned tomatoes, tomato sauces, pizza sauces, tomato puree, and a few other bits and bobs.
Both me and the boyfriend have been lucky lately actually- Nicky won a hamper too! He won a hamper from New covent garden- a lovely fruit, veg and nut collection just in time for Christmas! These meatballs are scrummy- my tip for the perfect meatballs, is whiever "flavour" you make them with herbs and spices (e.g. spanish, spicy, scandinavian etc.) use half pork and half beef mince. The fat in the pork keeps the meatballs moist, and the beef gives them rich flavour. If you can't get cirio tomato, garlic and herb sauce- just use your favourite pasta sauce.

Italian Meatballs with Cirio Sauce (serves 4)

250g pork mince
250g lean beef mince
1 very finely chopped red onion
3 garlic cloves, crushed
Handful fresh basil, chopped
1 egg
50g breadcrumbs
½ tsp dried mixed herbs
¼ tsp smoked paprika
Salt and pepper (plenty of!)

4 tbsp olive oil
1 jar Cirio garlic and herb tomato sauce
400g spaghetti

1. Mix together all the meatball ingredients, shape into medium sized meatballs (makes about 30) and put on a plate in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Preheat the oven to 200C. Put a pan of salted water onto the boil for the spaghetti. In a large frying pan (you will probably have to do this in batches) fry the meatballs on a high heat, stirring often, for 8 minutes. Put the meatballs in a baking dish and bake in the oven for 15 minutes.
3.Heat up the tomato sauce, drain the pasta, and serve the meatballs and sauce over the cooked spaghetti with whichever garnishes you might fancy (grated parmesan/cheese, freshly chopped herbs, extra virgin olive oil, cracked black pepper, etc.).

#31) The Dilemma

As a kid I loved watching the Alfred Hitchcock and Twilight Zone television shows.  I remember one episode in which this young man awakens with the ability to see in his mind,  a strangers impending death. For example,  he may be in a store or on a bus and suddenly he finds himself  mysteriously drawn or attracted to a particular person.  As he gives this person his focus, his  mind is flooded with  a visual movie of this individuals unfortunate fate over the next 15 minutes.  Our young man might experience a prophetic vision of this person leaving the store, walking across the street and getting struck and killed by a car.  He does not initially know whether his "awakening" is a gift or a curse.  What is he to do?  Does he tell this stranger what is going to happen or does he simply follow him and then  physically intervene in an attempt to save a life?  He quickly learns that confronting and  telling an individual their fate and advising them to change course is met with anger and rebuff.  So what is this good man with future vision to do?

My question to you is, what would you do, if you had this special gift of  intuition?  If you could look at a stranger and  foresee their future, be it injury, accidental death or sickness?  Would you go up to this individual and tell him what is going to happen?  I think we would all feel obligated to take such action, but could we  and would it be well received?

This is my dilemma and I want you to put yourself in my shoes for a moment.  I have been encouraging clients in correct diet/nutrition and weight loss for many years.  I have developed a superb system that makes losing weight quick and easy and I address the mental/emotional/habit aspect of weight gain and weight loss to help a person achieve weight loss for life.

So lets say that  I am out and about, maybe I am in a store, on an airplane, standing in a line and I see an obese (20% over ideal weight) person  or a morbidly (40% over ideal weight) obese person and my mind automatically calculates  what I know their blood chemistry profile and their body physiology  to be, it is no secret.  I know they are high cholesterol, high triglycerides, insulin resistant, I know their body fat is near 38-50%, I know they are low muscle mass, I know their visceral fat rating is 20+, I know they don't sleep well at night as they most likely have sleep apnea and I know they do not wake up feeling rested, I know their mood and libido is not good, I know that whether man or woman  their hormones are imbalanced,  I know they have high blood pressure and that they are taking  high blood pressure medication, Lipitor, and   if not on medication  for type 2 diabetes that they will be very soon,  I know they are at very high risk for heart disease, heart attack, stroke, cancer, gallbladder disease.  I know they will probably be taking the purple pill for acid reflux disease (GERD) and I know they will be experiencing either back, hip, knee or feet issues due to the stress and strain of extreme weight on these joints.  I know they don't feel good about themselves and I know they are either frustrated and depressed or they are in a state of pure denial.

I cannot remember the outcome of that particular television show, perhaps he lost his powers which then restored his peace and calm?  But I do feel a strong sense of obligation/duty to reach out and tell these people who struggle with weight gain that they can be helped and they can transform their health and that it is not as difficult as they might think it to be.  You may have a loved one in a weight gain crisis.  They need to be helped, I think we all have looked the other way for too long.  We know the progression of the condition is continuing weight gain and degradation of health and well being.

Read my blogs, weight loss can be easy and you don't have to starve and deprive yourself to lose the weight quickly.  With every 20 pounds you drop you will feel so much better. Until next time, Dr.  Mark Doyle.

Dr. Doyle is a certified clinical hypnotherapist, he created the DEEP Release Clear Mind Process a decade ago, he is co-founder of the 30/10 Weight Loss For Life solution and co-author of two recent new books, "Weight Loss For Life"  and "Stop The Pain, a new system of painless therapies to rapidly relieve pain and restore function."  He is a chiropractic physician with over 37 years clinical experience and he operates a chronic spine pain clinic and 30/10 weight loss clinic in beautiful downtown Bellevue, Washington, a suburb of Seattle.  30/10 means women average a loss of 30 pounds in 10 weeks and men average 50/10.

Recipe: Chorizo and Broad Bean Risotto

Ugh, finally!! Finally submitted my lame lab report. I had to write a 2000 word lab report on how bacteria grows in egg mayonnaise- seriously!! And I actually already hated egg mayonaise, and don't understand how people can eat the stuff- now I can barely even look at it at work! Lol! This is a nice risotto recipe, bit of a strange combination, lots of strong flavours together, but it's gorgeaus and earthy and comforting. You can use soy beans or peas as well as or instead of the broad beans if you fancy it.

Chorizo, broad bean and wild mushroom risotto (serves 2)

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 knob of butter
1 banana shallot, finely chopped
2 celery sticks, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
800ml vegetable stock
120g chorizo, diced
15g mixed dried wild mushrooms
800ml vegetable or chicken stock
Pinch of mixed herbs
120g frozen broad beans, soaked in boiling water and podded.
1 tbsp parmesan (plus extra for garnish if you want)
Salt and pepper to taste

1. Soak the dried mushrooms in boiling water for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C.
2. Sautee the shallot, celery and garlic in the olive oil and butter, in a large sautéing pan, for about 10 minutes, or until soft. Add the chorizo and fry for about 5 minutes.
3. Add the rice, stir to coat, and add the drained soaked mushrooms, mixed herbs and stock(adding the stock gradually, and stirring often). Cook for about 12-15 minutes, or until the rice has absorbed all the stock and is al dente. Around 5 minutes before the end of cooking, add the parmesan and the broad beans.
4. Meanwhile, put the chorizo in a roasting dish and roast in the oven for 8 minutes. Serve the risotto with the crispy chorizo garnished on top, and some extra grated parmesan if desired.

#30) DO U HAVE THE COURAGE TO CHANGE?

Interesting day in the weight loss department of my practice.  Everyone was a "winner" this week with a range of 3 to 12.8 pounds lost in one week.  Women usually lose an average of 3 to 5 lbs. a week and my 12.8 pound loser-winner was a man.  He is actually the biggest one week loser we have had to date.  We have had other 12 pound one week losses for men but the 12.8 cinched the record.  I had 3 women and two new men clients  this week so far that I had to do personal one on one sessions with to change beliefs.  (update Feb 28, 2013  this record has been surpassed with a one week 16.4lbs lost, an 18.8 lbs. lost and most recent 21.5 lbs. lost for first week male clients.  Men always lose more weight faster but an 8lb first week loss for a women is common.)

Today a woman weight loss patient told me she absolutely hates to cook and dreads the ordeal every day.  Fact of the matter is that she does not know how to cook, I am serious, she hates it so much that she has never taken the time to learn how to cook a chicken breast and vegetables for a stir fry.  Now, the fact that she does not know how to cook could also play a role in this "dread" she experiences.  The first thing I did in session with her is erase the feelings of dread that she experiences around 4pm, knowing that she is going to have to scrounge up something for the family, McDonald's anyone, is the common theme she confesses, a couple times a week.

I administered several passes of the DEEP Release Clear Mind Process and erased dread, frustration, overwhelm, anger, irritation, guilt and shame.  Then we created a belief statement, "I am a good cook and I enjoy making healthy meals for my family."  She was not congruent with that statement initially,  in other words there was no "software program" in her subconscious mind to support that statement.  In a matter of minutes however,  I successfully downloaded a new belief statement and with a gleam in her eye, she repeated the new belief to me with conviction and purpose.  A mere ten minutes earlier she told me she hated to cook, that she was a terrible cook, she dreaded dinner time and she hated to eat what ever she prepared in the kitchen.

She left my office excited to go to the store and prepare her first real dinner for her family, with a protein, vegetables and new spices.  I reviewed with her how to cook a chicken stir fry and I described the visual beauty of the veggies in the pan and the interesting variety of spices she will use that her family will absolutely love.  She demonstrated an immediate and  dramatic shift in emotion, thought and behavior- from seriously  negative to highly positive, from feelings of dreading to cook to  excited and enthusiastic.

There was no way that she was ever going to successfully keep her weight off unless she made the pivot into enjoying cooking a good healthy meal in her own kitchen.  My slim down program is all about weight loss for life, reaching a target goal and gaining the weight back is not at all acceptable. I always stress in all my blogs and to all my slim down clients that weight loss and weight gain is 50% physical or the diet and 50% mental/emotional/habit and I strive to address both.

One reason our patients achieve weight loss for life is because once they reach their ideal target weight and their program of weight loss is over, we do not abandon them.  Really, the program is never over for these people, they continue to come in for frequent and periodic body comp weigh-ins for NO Charge.  This is essential that they have life time follow up, accountability and coaching on how to lose any early weight gains on their own with regular foods.  We say NO Charge because there cannot be any barriers to them coming in for these vital checkups and coaching.  Emphasis is always on weight loss for life and self empowerment.

Until next time, Dr. Mark Doyle.

#29) The New Scoop on POOP

Some day Stool Banks will be as common place as Blood Banks are today.  What I am talking about is human stool (poop) transplants, yes, you would have several cups of a strangers poo (fecal material) transplanted into your colon for medicinal purposes.  This fecal transplant would be taking fecal material from a healthy person and transferring it into the colon of a sick person in order to restore the healthy colony of beneficial bacteria.   The results so far with a fecal transplant has been very encouraging for people who have an infection causing chronic diarrhea.  The C Difficile infection affects around 3 million people per year, normally these people would be subjected to antibiotics but antibiotics kill off the good bacteria and over time the bad bacteria become resistant to the antibiotic therapy.

These infections are serious, killing approximately 14,000 people per year, especially dangerous to kids and the elderly  causing colon inflammation and diarrhea.  New studies have shown that fecal bacteriotherapy can also be effective in difficult cases of  constipation, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and even in cases of  M.S.  and Parkinson's Disease??

Would you want to know who you received your fecal implant from?   Should it be anonymous? If you were a donor would you brag about it?  Would you have to ingest the transplant, maybe in tablet form?   So many questions and for the time being so few answers.  Until next time, Dr. Mark Doyle

#28) NEW HYBRID GRAINS=gluten intolerance

A very nice woman brings her son into my clinic for care.  The child has Hasimotos disease which is an auto immune condition, the body is attacking in this case its own thyroid gland.  The body thinks the thyroid
is the enemy and seeks to destroy it.  The immune system, when it has gone "haywire" can attack any tissue in the body. My first question to the mother was if any of the doctors she had seen had suggested a gluten free diet.  Gluten is a protein found in wheat that can cause a host of health conditions, you may have heard of celiac disease and irritable bowel disease as complications in some people from gluten.   Gluten is proving to be the culprit in a whole host of serious health conditions that most doctors and the general public know very little about.

My patient told me her child was tested for a gluten sensitivity and the test results came back negative, in other words the tests they performed did not show any reaction to gluten and so they told the mother it was fine for him to consume grains.   The first thing I think of when a patient tells me they have an autoimmune condition,  is gluten intolerance and I will direct my patient into a gluten free diet, rarely does anyone follow my advice.   They don't want to hear about it, gluten is in most foods, breakfast cereals, breads, cakes, cookies, and it is even in ketchups, mustards, beer, salad dressings, food stabilizers and I could go on and on.  When people are informed of this  their eyes glaze over, they ain't about to give up their favorite foods, not even for a week, no matter how sick they are.

I explained to my patient with the child that to really accurately test for gluten sensitivity you would have to test for all of the different aspects of gluten, about 10 or more in all, that we know of today.  When your doctor does a lab test for gluten he tests for two, that is the standard test today for determining if you are gluten sensitive.  So my patient with the child with Hasimotos disease had the standard test of two.  The real test for gluten sensitivity in my opinion is to totally remove ALL  gluten from your diet for a number of months and see how you feel.   Here is the problem, your abstinence from all gluten would have to be 100%, just a small amount of accidental ingestion of the gluten will keep the negative auto immune response alive and well.

Many vitamins use gluten as filler just to give you an example of how serious this diet must be.  Your diet would have to be strict animal protein  (no luncheon meats), vegetables and fruit.  Here is another rub, the majority of folks gluten sensitive are also sensitive or react negatively to the casein protein in milk.   The immune system is so disturbed/agitated in the gluten sensitive person that we will see  cross reactions with other food proteins. So the elimination diet would include no milk products, no oats, no yeast, no sesame and no coffee.  Also off the table would be corn, rice and any other grains.

Gluten sensitivity (GS) is a serious matter and just because you have no digestive or intestinal complaints it does not mean you do not have gluten intolerance.  Studies have shown that there are connections between gluten sensitivity and every major part of the nervous system to include the peripheral nerves, spinal cord and brain. Dr. Kharrazian  states that GS has been shown to be a significant trigger in psychiatric disorders, movement disorders, sensory ganglionapathy, ataxia, general neurological impairment, neuromyelitis, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, migraines,  dementia, restless leg syndrome and virtually almost every part of the nervous system evaluated.  GS can create an autoimmune attack against the brain or other parts of the nervous system.

So If you are sick, dedicate yourself to a 100% gluten free diet and total abstinence to the other "cross reaction"  foods that trigger the immune system to go on the attack.  Just one intentional or unintentional "cheat" on the diet will keep the immune system on high alert and in attack mode.

The wheat we eat today is called the "new" wheat, due to  hybridization of the grains.  Also the deamidation of grains from what I understand,  for food processing, creates an alien product that many people negatively  react to.   If you have a health condition I urge you to read up on the new understanding of gluten sensitivity and don't hold on to any faith in the current lab tests that may tell you all is well in the grain department. Search for a doctor who understands this process and is willing to help you .  Many experts believe up to 30 to 40% of  Americans may be gluten sensitive with serious health issues but have no idea that gluten/grains could be the causative factor.    Until next time, Dr. Mark Doyle

Recipe: Onion, Mushroom and Brie Tart

Hey guys, sorry about the lack of posting lately- but I must admit there is most likely going to be fewer posts than normal, until June next year probably- because of my degree. Got a lab report due in a week from now, which is absolutely horrifyingly boring and scary. Any way, this is a lovely quick dinner i made for myself last week- I had some brie to use up from when I went to a cheese fair. The brie was lovely actually- it's made in tipperary, soft and a great flavour, and some lovely nice old man sold it to me- Nick told me i'm such a sucker for an irish accent!!

Onion, Mushroom and Brie Tart (serves 4)

Knob of butter
1 tbsp olive oil
1 white onion, finely sliced
2 garlic cloves, crushed
¼ tsp oregano
6 cherry tomatoes
8 chestnut mushrooms, sliced
50ml tomato juice
1 tsp sundried tomato paste
Salt, pepper and sugar to taste
200g brie, sliced thinly
1 sheet ready rolled puff pastry
Egg (for brushing- optional)

1. Preheat the oven to 200C. Fry the onion and garlic for 10 minutes on a low heat, or until caramelised. Add all the other ingredients (except pastry, brie and egg) and cook for a further 5 minutes.
2. Roll out the pastry onto a baking try lined with greaseproof paper. Mark a small border around the edge of the pastry with a knife, and then prick the middle with a fork to stop this part from rising. Spread with the onion/mushroom mixture, and top evenly with slices of brie.
3. Brush the edges of the tart with beaten egg or milk, and bake in the oven for about 25 minutes- or until the pastry has risen and is golden. Serve, with a healthy green salad.

#27) "I am a TOUGH bitch, Dr. Doyle"...

On my 8th Street Chiropractic blog site I  have written  close to 100 blogs, my passion in practice  is the  treatment of chronic spine pain, the DEEP Release Clear Mind Process and the 30/10 Weight Loss For life system.  Every thing I do encompasses the "whole" person and what I mean by that is I take  a mind-body approach to healing.  This blog site details the 30/10 weight loss program, in my opinion it is the best slim down program available.  At my chiropractic site my blogs pertain to my Stop The Pain chiropractic approach and the DEEP Process of emotional erase and blogs on the art of appreciation .

We are not just a physical body, I have stressed this time and time again in all my blogs, yet we (doctors and patients) approach our life and our healing, our weight loss, most often from just a physical perspective.  As if all we are is a physical brain and body devoid of mind/emotions/beliefs/feeling.  In reality it is the mind side of this equation that dictates our physical physiology for the most part.  Stress and emotion is the big killer in our society yet we over look it as a causative factor in our health, our weight, our success in life, success in relationships, our happiness and our peace and calm.  It is theorized that 85% of visits to doctors are for conditions that are stress related.

What is stress??  If a  man comes into my office for care and if I were to ask him how much stress he has in his life he is proud to tell me his stress level is an 8 out of 10 with 10 being very high.  But if I were to ask him if he has any highly charged negative emotions that are stressing him out he will look at me as if I am crazy and deny vigorously any emotions.

Stress and  highly charged negative emotions are one and the same but for some reason "stress" is manly and "emotions" are for women, not a "guy" thing.  Had a lady in today, she had had a breakup a decade ago but the sadness, anger, rejection and betrayal was a 10 out of 10 as she quickly immersed herself into that memory, a memory that she has continued to rehearse and replay in her mind anyway on a daily basis for the past 10 years.  As the tears flowed she managed a "stiff upper lip" as she attempted to convince me that she does not dwell on it, "I am not an emotional person," she explains to  me as she wipes the tears from her face.  "People tell me I am a "tough bitch" she adds, "I don't let anything or anyone  bother me, that is one asset I have."  I ask her calmly if she would like to let go of the highly charged emotions around that memory breakup of many years ago, the sadness, the anger, the regret, the betrayal...  With more tears she becomes embarrassed and covers her face with her hands, "this is not like me," she mutters.  I ask her where in her body she notices these feelings and she points to her chest and I say, "your heart, your broken heart?"
"Yes, yes, yes" she quietly mouths as I hand her  tissues.  "Would you like to let go of these negative feelings of this memory from years ago," I ask her.   "Can you do that for me, can you do that?"  I explain to her I can do that in a matter of minutes if this is what she wants, "if you would like to let go of these trapped emotions we can do so right now,"  I assured her.

In a matter of minutes I made several passes of the DEEP Release Clear Mind Process and like magic the tears stopped, her hands dropped from her face and she looked at me with an expression  like what the hell did you just do?   I asked her to go back to that memory and tell me about the love of her life who rejected and betrayed her and to feel the anger and the sadness and the regret.  She struggled  and struggled to locate the past decade of sad feelings from this memory,  "it is gone Dr. Doyle, it is all gone, where did it go?"
We both laughed and I asked her to try again, to try harder and  to remember what he did to you and how sad it has been all these years.  She shook her head in amazement, it was all gone and--- it will not come back.

Trapped emotions buried alive never die, they just show up in another pair of shoes. You may think you are "tough" by repressing or denying highly charged emotions from a past experience but being tough does  not erase the problem, it just gives "them" a special room in your mind where "they" negatively express  into your life experience,  as you pretend to  look the other way. Until next time, Dr. Mark Doyle

Dr. Doyle's new book titled "Stop The Pain" is rolling off the presses and will be available soon.  The book details his unique stop the pain protocol for chronic spine and extremity pain conditions. He operates a high tech spine pain clinic in downtown Bellevue, Washington.  He has over 35 years of clinical experience and he is highly skilled.  He is a certified clinical hypnotherapist registered with the State of Washington and he has created the DEEP Release Clear Mind Process, a revolutionary method of erasing highly charged negative emotions in a matter of minutes and they (the charged emotions)  don't come back.  He is co-founder of the 30/10 Weight Loss For Life program, Dr. Doyle says it makes losing weight as easy as pie.  Woman lose an average 30 lbs. in 10 weeks and men lose an average of 50 lbs. in 10 weeks.   He combines hypnosis with his slim down program to make the process effective.  50% of weight loss and weight gain is physical or diet and the other 50% is mental/emotional/habit and behavior  and both aspects of this vital equation must be addressed.  425-455-1881

#26) Take Your Medicine!

It is a dangerous world out there, I just heard this morning  on the radio that you have a 1 in 3,200 chance of space junk falling on your head.  I don't know about you but that  makes me want to stay inside, no more lawn mowing or pushing the garbage can up the hill for me, I am staying inside.  But I will tell you what is scary and should be of a concern to anyone who is taking drugs, be it prescription or the over the counter stuff.  Here are the facts for you to chew on:

Prescription drug reactions cause more than 2,000,000 hospital admissions every year in America. (Journal of the American Medical Association - JAMA)

More than 180,000 Americans die every year from taking their medications!!!   9-11 killed around 3,000 people and we went to war, losing another 3,000 soldiers in the battle.  The drug industry is a power house industry, they make a lot of really bad drugs, most new drugs that come out every year are taken off the market within 5 years with class action lawsuits over the deaths and damages they cause.

Prescription medication use is the third (3rd) leading cause of death in America-dwarfing automobile accidents, AIDS, alcohol and illegal drug abuse, infectious disease, diabetes and murder.

More than 106,000 patients die per year because of  PROPERLY  prescribed drugs.  In other words what this report is detailing is that taking a drug to change body physiology is serious and has great risk.

Improper prescription events include both physician and patient errors, like prescription of the wrong drug, wrong dose or wrong patient...

June 8, 2010 a huge Danish study finds that high doses of common painkillers raise the risk of heart death in healthy people.  "We found that most NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, diclofenac, cataflam, voltaren...) are associated with increased cardiovascular mortality and morbidity (death)," says researcher Emil Loldrup Fosbol, MD, of Gentofte University Hospital in Hellerup, Denmark.

Perhaps of concern to more Americans is the finding that ibuprofen (brand names include Advil and Motrin) increased risk of stroke by about 30% in the Fosbol study.

Based on other evidence, an American Heart Association panel in 2007 warned that treating chronic pain with NSAIDs other than aspirin increases a person's risk of heart attack and stroke.  The lead author of this AHA statement, Elliot M. Antman of Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital says the Fosbol findings underscore the importance of those recommendations.  "Doses examined in this study were very similar to doses that patients are likely to encounter both  at over-the-counter level and prescription level," Antman says in a news release.
This article taken from WebMD Health News by Daniel J DeNoon, titled-Common Painkillers Raise Heart Death Risk.  Ibuprofen increases stroke risk; Diclofenac as risky as Vioxx, study finds.

Solution?  Ask questions, do I really need this drug?  Is there something I could be doing instead? Is this the correct dose for my body size and my age?  Ask both the doctor and the pharmacist and then look up the drug you are taking, understand the potential side effects.   Maybe a good chiropractor could lessen your need for pain killers?  And maybe a great weight loss program could dramatically improve your health potential, normalize your blood pressure and eliminate your need for Lipitor and Viagra?  Our patients get out of pain quickly and our 30/10 Weight Loss program is amazing, women lose an average of 30 lbs. in 10 weeks, men lose 50/10,  and we frequently see blood pressure and cholesterol levels come back to normal again.  Nothing is more important than our health-eat right, lose the weight, exercise, sleep well and let go the stress, and provided you are not a space junk statistic you could live to a vibrant ripe old age.   Until next time, Dr. Mark Doyle

#25) WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?

Patients ask me how I change beliefs. It is very easy for me to do and it does not take but a matter of minutes. I will define a belief as something we feel strongly about and have proof.  Lets say you have a strong belief that you will remain fat for the rest of your life.  When I ask you how you know that for certain, you then provide me with a long list of "proofs."  You may tell me that your whole family is fat and the doctors have told you it is genetic.  Another "proof" you may have is perhaps you have been fat since grade school.  And you know for certain that as a woman gets older she just gets fatter, and you have some "proofs" on that fact as well.   So my new prospective slim down client has just disarmed me with her "proofs" as to why she cannot lose weight, or has she??  My response to my new friend is, "then you know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you are not going to be able to slim down, reach your target goal and keep the weight off for life, don't you?"   Then I ask, "would you like to lose the weight if you could, reach your ideal weight and keep that weight off for the rest of your life?"   Now that is a really good question because it tells if I am dealing with someone who really wants to slim down.  If they say to me that they would love to lose the weight if they could and they are being honest with themselves in that statement then it is a piece of cake for me to change their belief.

We have two minds you know, we have an active conscious thinking mind and we have a subconscious mind where we store all our experiences, emotions, true feelings and beliefs.  In reality it is the subconscious mind that drives our bus, we consciously react to those subconscious feelings and beliefs like little robots.  When I change beliefs I go into the subconscious mind and I erase the false or limiting beliefs and replace them with  more beneficial and useful beliefs.  Essentially if someone has a program running in the subconscious, that they are going to be fat the rest of their life, and that program was installed at some time in their life with strong emotion and or repetition, then that software program is going to run their  life (behaviors, feelings, actions, resulting life experiences, etc.)  as it relates to that strong belief.   In a matter of minutes I will erase the false and limiting programs and download a new positive and constructive belief.  It is rewarding to see the shift in a client's expression and demeanor when the pivot/shift in belief occurs.  This process is  essential in many of my client cases  in order to make their slim down program effective.   Weight loss is not just about the diet, we have to effectively handle the mental/emotional/habit side of this issue and when we do we get fast and certain weight loss that is exciting and transforming.
Until next time, Dr. Mark Doyle

Review: Aio, Sardinian restaurant, Bath

I’ve been waiting to go to this Sardinian restaurant for months, since Nick promised me he’d take me there sometime in the summer, so as a late anniversary treat Nick finally managed to book us a table and get us here! The atmosphere is lovely, it is a very small restaurant, about 40 seats, but that gives the place a nice cosy feel. The staff informed us of the specials on the board, and other specials that they hadn’t put up there yet (I like the sound of their specials, although they seemed far pricier than what was on the rest of the menu). What I liked on the drinks menu is how dishes from the main menu have been suggested with the wines, so you can pair up the dishes you are going to order depending on your wine choice. Since we already knew that we were going to share an antipasti platter and we were both going to be ordering pasta, we chose the house red option “Arpeggio Rosso” which had said complimented these dishes, which I would say was a pleasant enough wine.

For starter we had the Antipasto terra, which was a selection of cured ham, bologna, salami (or something similar?), mozzarella, little peaks of pecorino, olives, salad in a balsamic dressing and Sardinian flat bread on a wooden board. The wooden board actually is the same one we use for tapas at work- I can’t ruddy escape that place lol!! It also came with two kilner jars, one filled with marinated aubergines and the other marinated peppers. I think that the portion size was more than adequate, but I would have much preferred some nice hunks of rustic bread instead of the Sardinian flat bread they served it with- which was very nothingy and really thin, kind of like an Italian poppadum or something!! Overall perhaps I felt the whole selection was a little…salty perhaps. The pecorino, cured ham, and marinated vegetables were all very strong flavours, and I think perhaps they need to work on making the combination of ingredients work together a little better. However, I did enjoy the starter, as you could tell that all the separate elements were fresh and of good quality.

For the main course I had the “Malloreddus all Campidanese”, which on the menu was described as shell shaped pasta with Sardinian sausage, tomato and saffron. Nick had the “Culurgiones All Agnelo” which was pea and potato ravioli topped with a lamb ragu. When my dish arrived my first reaction was how very basically it had been presented. Not meant to be an insult, but it looked like any sort of pasta-in-a-tomato-sauce-like dish that any student could prepare and spoon into a bowl. But my first mouthful indicated to me that it was so much more than this. The flavours were so rich, intense, concentrated and delicious- that I completely forgot about the very “basic looking” plate of food in front of me. This is what rustic Italian food should stand for- nothing to do with looks, EVERYTHING to do with flavour! I really liked the texture and unique flavour of the Sardinian sausage as well- they had obviously been skinned and cooked into a sauce, similar to mince, but you could get hints of fennel/lemony flavoured meat in there which was very pleasant. I’ve got to admit, the saffron was completely lost in the dish, and I couldn’t taste any of it, but really saffron has no place in a dish with such strong flavours dominating it, and there was no need of this spice in my opinion. Nick’s ravioli was very nice as well- the filling could have done with a little more seasoning, but the ragu was rich and delicious and the ravioli had been made and cooked very well.

The staff were very attentive, and seemed very friendly to customers- the manager there seemed to be having nice conversations about Italian food and culture with various customers who had visited Sardinia and was interested in finding out more about it. Dessert I have got to admit though was terribly disappointing. We were told that the panacotta was sold out, which was a shame, so Nick suggested we order chocolate fondant, to share. I told Nick at the time that I wondered if they made their desserts fresh here, since I used to work in an Italian chain restaurant, and knew that we made none of the desserts fresh (except the panacotta ) and that a lot of Italian restaurants have the same supplier of desserts and therefore serve the same dishes, perhaps slightly differently described. Kinda like how you get the same desserts in Indian restaurants too- because they all have the same stockists and they don’t make them.

Well the fondant arrived, and I did the “fondant test” on it- putting your spoon into the middle of the fondant and spreading it out- to reveal what should be an oozing liquid centre. In this case- no dice, completely solid. There were also little line marks on the top of the fondant which would suggest to me that they had come from a foil packet of some sort. If as I suspect, it had come from a packet, they had also microwaved it for too long- the chocolate tasted bitter and overcooked. A disappointing end to the meal, but I didn’t leave there feeling completely cheated. The main courses were so delicious, and the atmosphere was so pleasant, that I would definitely return to this restaurant again. It is a mid-high priced restaurant so it would only be for a special occasion, but it’s a very nice and romantic place to eat I think. Service I would give 9/10, whilst for the food I would have to give a 7/10, mainly because of the issues with puddings. As far as I’m concerned, the place is a rustic, romantic, Italian restaurant, that incorporates fresh ingredients into delicious dishes.

PS: I forgot to mention, what I thought was a cool thing that the restaurant does on sundays that if you call in advance and book it, they can prepare you and your group of friends roast suckling pig, with rosemary potatoes and chargrilled vegetables- how rather scrummy sounding! I might try this out some day xx

Recipe: Mediterranean Vegetable Baguette

Bit of an unusual sandwich but it was absolutely delicious, really quick to make, and really set me up for the night! You can use the roasted aubergine slices you get vac-packed in olive oil from the world bit of the supermarkets, or you can just roast slices of it yourself- thick slices, drizzled with plenty of olive oil, salt and pepper, and chucked in the oven at 200C for about 10 minutes.

Mediterranean Vegetable Baguette (serves 1)

1 demi baguette (warm: optional)
4 thick slices roasted aubergine in olive oil (use deli, or roast your own)
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small clove garlic, crushed
½ green pepper, diced
4 chestnut mushrooms, quartered
1 tbsp Philadelphia
1 tsp sundried tomato paste
Salt and pepper

1. Fry the peppers, mushroom and garlic in olive oil, for 10 minutes. Mix together the Philadelphia and sundried tomato paste. Open up the baguette. Spread both sides with the cream cheese.
2. Arrange the slices of aubergine, and the hot fried mushrooms and peppers. Press together, slice and serve!

Competition: Red Tractor Assurance Recipe Competition

Hey guys, sorry I havent posted in a while, it's just i've got this mahoosive scary assignment that i've just only just manage to finish now (the day before the hand-in date) so i've had to really focuss on my Uni stuff recently. Anyway, so you might have remembered me mentioning this competition a little over a month ago, and, well, it's all over now and I got second place! My Cider and Mustard Chicken, made with Red Tractor Farm assured ingredients, won me a pretty Aga Cast Iron oven dish, and a red tractor branded apron and tote bag.
To be honest, I should have got 1st place, it's all down to the fact that these people can't run a competition properly (people could vote unlimited times, and I was winning for the full 5 weeks of the competition just from normal votes, then on the last night of the comp someone spam voted their entry in order to win), but hey ho, never mind- 2nd place is still pretty fab anyway! Thanks to any of you guys for voting for me xx

Zero Waste Europe - my top 10 favourite blogposts

So, did you know it's the European Week for Waste Reduction?  I guess it's not the most snappy of names to roll off the tongue, but I love the fact there is one week in the year that's dedicated towards bringing our diverse continent together in the fight against waste.

It also makes me feel that my dusty old degree in Modern European Studies from (cough) the 1980s, still has some relevance to my life today.  The concluding motto in 1989 was that 'Europe is a unity through its diversity'.  I can't remember what I made of that back then, but when it comes to tackling our mountain of waste, it's certainly relevant to today's range of initiatives - diverse yet united towards the same goal, that of waste minimisation.

So for EWWR, (a much snappier title), I thought I'd kick off with an introduction to one of my favourite Zero Waste blogs, Zero Waste Europe, and my top ten favourite blogposts, revealing some of the great ideas that are taking place on the continent as well as inspiration from further afield.

The association of Italian Zero Waste towns has been created

Little Museum of Bad Industrial Design

Kretsloppsarken. Recycling or amusement park?

A Zero Waste month in Sweden: 4 people = less than 1kg of waste!

The first European university to ban bottled water?

Retorna – When waste has a value it stops being waste

Repair café – a project to make friends, not waste

The art of Zero Waste!

David Andersen Copenhagen; designing waste out of fashion

On the Road to Zero Waste: Lessons from around the world

But seriously, don't stop there.  There are plenty of other great posts, including some wonderful examples of waste reduction activities in the UK too, such as Nappy Ever After and Unpackaged.

For anyone who wants to explore the wider approach to Zero Waste, Zero Waste Europe really is a great place to start.

And on that note, as you travel virtually from country to country, perhaps all that's left to say, is 'Bon Voyage!'

The Rubbish Diet could be coming to a town near you!

The Rubbish Diet team visiting Nesta!
Please excuse my tardiness in sharing this VERY EXCITING news with you.

I should have done it last week, but with news of my mum falling ill, then rushing to Wales to see her, then losing my laptop en route, and continued worries about her health, understandably this blog has had to take a back seat.

However, I can't keep it quiet any longer!  What's happening with The Rubbish Diet is far too exciting to keep tucked away in my desk drawers and if you follow me on Twitter, you may have indeed caught a few snippets of the news.

So to the sound of an imaginary drum-roll, I am chuffed to pieces to announce that my Rubbish Diet challenge has been selected as a semi-finalist in a national waste reduction competition, which could see the 'slimming club' analogy rolled out to villages, towns and cities, right across the UK, helping communities achieve an amazing impact on reducing their rubbish.

The Waste Reduction Challenge, run by Nesta, the UK’s innovation foundation, and funded by the Cabinet Office, aims to identify new ideas that can influence and mobilise communities to make significant reductions in waste and impact behaviour for years to come.

In partnership with the Zero Waste Alliance UK (working with Katy Anderson, pictured above), the Rubbish Diet competition entry proposes to engage with established community groups around the UK, including schools, Transition Towns and W.I. branches, to help them organise their own waste-busting challenges, following an 8-week plan of fun and lively events that will help to empower households to slim their bins.

The idea is, of course, based on the very roots of this blog, when I took St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Zero Waste Week Challenge almost five years ago, (remember that plaster?), and which then developed into the online Rubbish Diet Challenge 2012, where I mentored 8 households through the process of slimming their bins, by at least 50%, at the beginning of this year.

Building on that, I have since been busy with Transition Shrewsbury, which has already launched its Rubbish Diet Shropshire community pilot, where 20 households have signed up to reduce their waste.  This is just the first stage. The Rubbish Diet Shropshire project, which is being managed locally, will launch even wider in the new year,  with events run by the community for the community, with households just like yours and mine, sharing knowledge about how they reduce their waste and attempting to overcome the hurdles that arise.

And it's that process, which the Nesta Waste Reduction Challenge will help to replicate around the UK.

So, we're in the semi-finals!  What next?

This is where even more hard work begins, in putting together an ambitious but realistic plan to roll-out the Rubbish Diet challenge next year, featuring a communications strategy, participant engagement, measuring & monitoring procedures and lots of other exciting things that will help communities launch their own slimming clubs for bins.

So, there really really could be a fun Rubbish Diet challenge coming to an area near you.  Just imagine!

We just need to get through the next round! But, boy, is the competition tough! So please keep watching this space for further news.

And of course, if you think your community would like to join in, then do get in touch.

___________________________________

The Waste Reduction Challenge Prize is offering a prize for the innovation that achieves the biggest measureable reduction in waste, by providing new opportunities for communities to come together to give time, skills and resources.

The semi-finalists (which also includes a Mattress Recycling Scheme in my home county of Suffolk) will be supported to develop a detailed plan for their idea. In January, five concepts for each, with the potential for sustainability and scale, will be selected to test their ideas. They will receive up to £10,000 and professional advice to set up and test their projects before a winner for each challenge is selected in September 2013 and awarded £50,000.

Get to know Breast Cancer Symptoms

Breast Cancer Symptoms
Normally, the body's cells naturally reproduced only when needed. But sometimes these cells can continue to multiply without control, forming a dense network also called a tumor, If the cells are normal cells to multiply, it is not dangerous. but if that is the cells multiply abnormally, that trigger cancer.

Breast cancer, for example. As the name implies, this cancer begins in the breast tissue and can spread to the breast even to other organs. The spread is also called metastasis. Not only occurs in women, breast cancer can affect men. Not yet known exactly what causes cancer, but some factors can increase a person's risk of developing cancer, for example:

1. Age.
In women, the risk of someone getting breast cancer increases as age began forty years old and from the age of sixty years in men.

2. Genetic.
The risk increases if a close relative who has had breast cancer.

3. Unhealthy diet and obesity.

4. Smoking and drinking alcohol frequently.

5. Lazy to exercise.

Here are the symptoms caused by breast cancer: - A lump on or around the breast after the menstrual period is complete - Changes in the shape and size of the breast - Clear or bloody discharge from the nipple - Breast skin becomes wrinkled or scaly - The skin becomes red or inflamed breast and nipple changes (such as peeling)

Lack of awareness of the dangers of breast cancer is often detected only after making the disease is quite severe. To prevent breast cancer, it is recommended to do a routine check yourself (self-exams). Touch the breast for possible lumps, or a check with mammograms when you are entering the age of forty, especially if your family has a history of breast cancer. Examination of the 3D Sonomamogram considered more accurate and safer because it does not use radiation.

Need tips on a more simple, so that the cancer does not 'close'? You should exercise regularly, at least for half an hour every day. Eating healthy foods is also very helpful, eg berries (strawberries and raspberries) is rich in antioxidants and green vegetables (spinach, broccoli and cabbage). Avoid processed foods and full fat.
