#11) The Challenge of Family

A very nice lady comes into the clinic last week and starts a 3 month slim down program with me.  We established an ideal weight loss goal of 40 lbs. which will take about 10 to 12 weeks at an average weight loss of 3 to 5 lbs. per week. She recognized her need to lose the weight and reverse her habits to become fit and healthy again.  With my new slim down clients I like to have them come in to talk with me a couple times a week the first few weeks as they also begin their sessions in our infrared sauna while they listen to very powerful taped programs that help transition them into a healthy lifestyle mindset.  It is interesting to note that 50% of weight loss and weight gain is physical(diet) and the other 50% is mental/emotional and bad habits.  Our program is all about weight loss for life, anything short of that objective is a waste of time,  effort and money.   Here is what she told me, her battle for weight loss was not just her correcting years of bad habits,  but her family was not supportive of her decision to lose weight.

Negative people can present challenging  obstacles for us to overcome because we have to push our will to succeed above their doubts and objections and cynicism.   Living with people/family who do not want you to change and who believe you will never really be able to slim down only serve to dampen your enthusiasm for accomplishing your goals and objectives.  On the other hand , just imagine a family situation in which you have the love and support of family members, their encouragement and their faith expressed that you can do it.
I knew this wonderful lady was faced with a tough road ahead at home and so my work with her had to take her to a different place in mind.  I had to change her perspective from what was happening at home to where she will be into the future as she transforms with the 30/10 solution.

I took her into her future desired state, where she was able to see and to feel her new self, 40 lbs. lighter, slimmed down and fitting  into new clothes, and with great energy and vitality.  Her face beamed as we completed this process and she became very peaceful and calm.  I encouraged her to see the stress at home as only an incentive for her to fulfill her goal and objective of weight loss for life.  She understood that as she changed, eventually so would her family members but at the moment her dietary choices and her new objectives made the rest of her family feel threatened.  In the meantime I encouraged her to use every negative comment or attitude from them as an instant reminder for her to immediately focus and give her attention to the solutions she has available to accomplish her goal, to use these potentially negative moments as a trigger to remind her of her purpose and her eventual desired state.   So the game will be that when your husband makes a disparaging  remark about you losing weight, you will mentally thank him for reminding you to shift  your focus and attention to a positive reaffirmation of your slim down process with  a picture in your mind of how you will look and feel 40 lbs. lighter, you will also visualize yourself a year from now, healthy and fit, the  new and improved  you.

I actually believe that with this process I have laid out for her she will become a stronger person on her quest for weight loss  into  a   healthier lifestyle, despite the potential drag on her purpose from negative family members.  If she can apply this simple mental game in response  to their attempts to dampen her enthusiasm,  she will create a very positive habit of thought that will serve her very well for the rest of her life.  Just a simple 5 minute hypnosis process with this lady was enough to shift her focus from what is,  to what will be.   She will succeed with the 30/10 program and become a beacon of light for other family members who have been fearful of creating their own change.  She will easily accomplish her goal  and surprise them all and I have no doubt that they will respect and admire her for her strength, determination and commitment.  Until next time, Dr. Mark Doyle.
