#12) Change Your LIFE (mind)

I just finished reading a really good book, Change your Brain, Change your Life, by Dan Amen M.D.. He is the medical director of a large neuropsychiatric  clinic in Calif.  The theme of his book is that our state of mind has a certain tone...or flavor based largely on the types of thoughts we think. When specific structures deep within our brain, called the limbic system, are over-active, it sets the mind's filter on negative. People who are depressed have one depressing thought after another. When they look at the past with this negative emotional slant, they feel sadness and remorse and their future gaze is one of fear and anxiety and pessimism.  It is as if they are looking at life through dark shaded glasses and their negative thoughts are on auto pilot.  If you are depressed and discouraged all the time where is the energy and enthusiasm and optimism to start a new project or to prepare yourself for a better future?  If it is all negative then there is no "better" future, there is no hope and there will be no change.  ( oh yeah, hope and change, where have I heard that before??)

Did you know that every thought you have sends electrical signals throughout your brain?  Well that is exactly what this good doctor  says.  He goes on to say that thoughts have actual physical properties, that they are real!  You have a thought, your brain releases chemicals, an electrical transmission goes across your brain and you become aware of what you are thinking.  Negative thoughts produce negative chemicals that make you feel bad and positive thoughts produce positive chemicals that make you feel good.

Bottom line, our thoughts matter and we can train our thoughts to be positive or to be negative.

Many of my blogs detail this line of reasoning, it only makes good sense doesn't it?  Some folks have negative habitual thoughts and every negative thought they think simply attracts or leads into another negative thought, a great way to feel miserable all the time and make yourself sick.  If this is of interest to you, take the time to read my past blogs, many of them relate to this specific subject.  Nothing is more important than you feeling good and what I mean by that is, if you are not "feeling good" then you are feeling bad and if feeling good or bad is a choice we can make, why think the thoughts that make you feel bad?  Until next time , Dr. Mark Doyle
