#8) Timmy Takes Control

I had a consult the other day with a very nice gentleman who said he was ready to lose the weight.  He was 50 years old, 5' 7" tall and he weighed in at 210 lbs.,  55 lbs. over weight.   His body fat topped the charts and his visceral or belly fat was in the high range, his "body age" was 66 years old.  Not a healthy situation for sure as he was at high risk of high blood pressure (he was on meds for BP), high risk for high cholesterol (on meds for that), high risk for heart disease, heart attack, stroke, gallbladder disease (was removed two years ago), high risk for type 2 diabetes and various forms of cancer.

Our client in this blog,  I will call him Dave, thought our consultation  was just between the two of us but little did Dave really know that there was a 3rd personality that had joined in on our consultation that very day. The uninvited guest sitting between me and Dave was the extra 55 lbs. of fat that had taken up residence in Dave's 155 lb. frame.

We can actually give this extra 55 lbs. of fat a name, lets call this "consciousness" Timmy,   just for the heck of it .   Timmy first got his foothold inside of  Dave when Dave was 22 years old, Timmy was born of beer and junk food in those college days and he grew fast.  At age 30, Dave stated he weighed 180 lbs., exactly 25 lbs. over his "athletic" 155 lbs., from his high school football days.  By the age of 40, (Dave grimaced as he recalled this memory),  he weighed in at an all time high of 195, Timmy's presence  constituted 40 of those unwanted pounds .  Timmy was pretty much in control at this point in time and he (Timmy) quickly added another 15 lbs. to his "person" the next 10 years  for a total weight of 55 lbs., Timmy was only 28 years old, Dave was 50 years old.

Timmy was present and active in the consultation with Dave that day in my office.  It was Dave who made that original decision to call and make the appointment.  But as we started talking I could see that Timmy was beginning to exert his control, Timmy answered a lot of my questions I was directing to Dave.  Timmy joked about Dave's weight (love handles), (my college beer belly)...   Timmy told me Dave feels great actually  and that he does a lot of work in the yard and used to throw the football with the boys.  Timmy said Dave's high  blood pressure and high cholesterol was inherited.  Timmy informed me that  Dave's  diet is actually pretty good but his metabolism has always been slow since college, he only drinks  3 to 4 beers a week and they are micro brews so they are healthy.  Timmy told me  Dave's wife is about 20 lbs. overweight and that they were going to start a serious walking program in the spring, "going to walk every day rain or shine..."

As we talked  I tried to direct my attention to Dave in this consultation but  I soon  began to notice that Dave slowly became very quiet and then faded from the conversation as Timmy took full control.  Timmy informed me that Dave just was not ready yet to begin a diet, they have too many things going on at home and at his work right now, there is a vacation coming up in a month, some out of town work jobs planned and then some birthdays and an anniversary to celebrate.  So  maybe in the summer when things quiet down he will think about a slim down program.  Timmy was feeling pretty good about himself at this point in the consultation, he had survived a close call and he had been able to put weak Dave in his place, hell, in another 10 years Timmy will be 38 years old and weigh in at a solid 70 lbs. or more.  Dave will be 60 years old and the likelihood of Dave ever challenging Timmy at that age will be very remote, especially if Timmy can accelerate one of the significant health risk factors for Dave and really slow the old boy down.

66% of Americans are overweight, obesity is now considered an epidemic.  We are getting fatter and sicker every year, these are the facts of those statistics.  Timmy argued with me when I presented Dave with the stats on the health risks of being overweight, Timmy told me that slim and fit people die too and his neighbor has cancer and is normal weight.  Timmy shrugged Dave's big shoulders as he explained to me the real facts of life as he sees it, life is short Timmy informed me and if a beer or buffalo wing can brighten your day, then why not?
